SFU reinvests $10m with vcib
In a press release posted on January 12, 2023, SFU announced its investment of $10 million with Vancity Community Investment Bank (VCIB) Impact GIC (Guaranteed Investment Certificate). Community Reinvestment is an important follow-up to the Divestment demand in our Climate Emergency Declaration Campaign. This achievement is thanks to the members of our Divestment Working Group.
City of burnaby environmental award
The City of Burnaby presented SFU350 the Environmental Award during its council meeting in June 2022. This award recognized the club’s larger-scale environmental achievements, namely SFU’s divestment decision and climate emergency declaration. SFU350 is the first student-let club from SFU to receive the award. We thank the City of Burnaby for recognition at the municipal level of our hard work!
SFU annouces full divestment
In November 2021, SFU announced its decision to completely divest from fossil fuels by 2025. This decision meant a lot to us as SFU350 originally started as a divestment campaign in 2013. It is also the first of seven demands to be met under our Climate Emergency Declaration campaign, and achievement reached less than two months following the official launch. We thank our community and allies for the outstanding support shown to us since 2013 in making this possible, and especially Zain Haq and Jaden Dyer for bringing us across the finish line!
Thakore Visiting Scholar Award
SFU350 received the Thakore Visiting Scholar Award from the SFU Institute for the Humanities in October 2022. The award is given to “a remarkable individual (or organization) whose life and work embodies the principles of social justice, equality, non-violence, environmental conservation, conflict resolution, and world peace”. We thank the Institute for the Humanities for recognizing SFU350’s commitment to climate justice!
Faculty of Environment Changemaker award
In May 2022, SFU350 received the Changemaker Award from SFU’s Faculty of Environment (FENV). The FENV cited our lobbying efforts in our Divestment and Climate Emergency Declaration campaigns as an important qualification for an FENV Changemaker. Thank you to the FENV celebrating SFU350’s ongoing commitment to making an impact at SFU!
Climate emergency declaration campaign launch
SFU350 officially launched its Climate Emergency Declaration campaign in September 2021. This included sending an open letter to SFU calling on the university to formally declare a climate emergency and commit to seven demands that address the climate crisis at the institutional level. The letter received over 1,000 signatures from student groups/unions, labour unions, environment groups, and individual students. A climate mural designed by Jess Stanley was painted at the Convocation Mall on Burnaby Campus as a visual representation of the campaign. We are forever grateful for the overwhelming community solidarity shown to us during the campaign!
Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award
In September 2022, SFU Chancellor Tamara Vrooman presented SFU350 with the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award. It recognizes outstanding commitment and service at SFU. SFU350 is the first student group to receive this award. Thank you Tamara for this prestigious recognition!
SFU DECLARES A GLOBAL CLIMATE EMERGENCY
SFU formally declared a climate emergency in an April 2022 press release. This achievement was the overarching goal for SFU350’s Climate Emergency Declaration Campaign, and notably a direct result of nearly 10 years of student activism from the club. Thank you each and every one of our supporters in and beyond SFU for your solidarity and making this huge win possible!
